On November 20, 2019, the Economic Development Council (EDC) of South Miami-Dade County, Inc. hosted the first of three community meetings that will lead to the creation of a South Dade Economic Development Strategic Plan. The meeting was held at Zoo Miami’s Florida Room with over 60 people in attendance.
Attendees were welcomed by project partners Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava, representing Miami-Dade County; Lisa Greer, Chair of the EDC; Isabel Cosio Carballo, Executive Director of the South Florida Regional Planning Council; and Greg Vaday, Southeast Representative for the U.S. Economic Development Administration. The agenda also included updates by the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) and the Beacon Council regarding recent economic development efforts in South Dade. The meeting was also attended by Village of Pinecrest Mayor Joe Corradino and Town of Cutler Bay Mayor Tim Meerbott.
In addition to providing an update to the community, the purpose of the meeting was to seek participant input on the following topics:
Participants were asked to provide what they believed are the most pressing issues in these key areas, as well as potential solutions. The input received at this meeting and future meetings will serve as the foundation for the strategic plan which will be completed by late spring 2020.
Since 2016, the South Dade community has been engaged to develop an economic development program for the southern portion of Miami-Dade County. Originally spearheaded by Commissioner Cava, Commissioner Dennis C. Moss, and the Office of Mayor Gimenez, these efforts included the development of the More to Explore marketing strategy and the receipt of a grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration to support the creation of a new Economic Development Strategic Plan for South Dade.
The consulting team that is managing this effort for the project partners, is led by Lambert Advisory and includes Bermello Ajamil & Partners, and Calvin, Giordano & Associates.
The second community meeting will take place on January 30, 2020, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, at Evelyn Greer Park in Pinecrest.
